I’ve been a bit down this spring, feeling scattered and uninspired, and feeling glum, found myself peeking over the fence at people I admired who had a “happy hustle.” What I saw is what I already knew, but forgot. The people that I admire for their fulfillment in their ambition almost always have a practice of gratitude. Which is markedly different from just saying “thanks” and running to the next thing. It’s really taking the time to stop and breathe in all the goodness, even, and especially, when things go to shit.
If you’re already rolling your eyes at me, I get it! Gratitude journaling certainly doesn’t sound sexy, but it can be if you’re doing it right. It’s also been scientifically proven to improve your physical and psychological health. Plus it takes less than 5 minutes each day.
Want to join me? Let’s cheer each other on and keep ourselves accountable together. For the next 4 weeks (May 1-28) let’s show off our thankful showgirl selves. Each week has a theme, and each day, pick one thing (from the prompts below or follow your own!), and write 3-5 sentences about why you’re grateful. You can use a journal or simply a notes app on your phone, but be sure to actually write it out, instead of just thinking about it.
- Week 1: Community – family, friends, a lover, a mentor (known or stalked on Instagram), someone who hired you, your favorite character on TV, pets count too!
- Week 2: Comfort and Care – eg, your daily cup of tea, your bathtub, dancing in your underwear
- Week 3: Drive and Determination – that song that gets you through a long day, finally accomplishing a goal, beating your best time running a mile, a difficult time that helped you grow
- Week 4: Self – your winning smile, your easy way with words, a strong core (physically or otherwise!), that killer orgasm you had last week
If you miss a day, just get back on it the next day, no judgement, only love.
Share your gratitude online with #thankfulshowgirl and tag Delinquent Debutantes! And at the studio, add your thankful thoughts on the chalkboard door each week!
